Blue Zones® are five places in the world where people live the longest and are healthiest. Blue Zones founder Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow, found them with teams of researchers and studied how the people there live.
The people in all five places share nine everyday habits, which Blue Zones calls the Power 9®. We believe these habits can help lead to a long and happy life, and they guide how we cook.
Nine habits the world’s longest-lived people share, and what each one means.

Build movement into your day. The longest-lived people walk, garden and do chores by hand rather than relying on workouts.

Know why you wake up in the morning. Okinawans call it ikigai; in Nicoya it’s plan de vida.

Shed stress every day, whether with a nap, a prayer, a moment to remember loved ones or a happy hour with friends.

Stop eating when you’re about 80% full (the Okinawan saying hara hachi bu), and make the last meal of the day the smallest.

Eat mostly plants, with beans at the center. Meat is a small, occasional food.

In four of the five places, people enjoy a glass or two of wine a day, with friends or with food.

Be part of a community. Nearly all of the centenarians Blue Zones interviewed belonged to a faith-based community.

Put family first: keep aging parents and grandparents close, commit to a life partner and give your children time and love.

Surround yourself with people who support healthy habits. In Okinawa, groups of five friends called moais stay committed to each other for life.
The Power 9® comes from Blue Zones® research. Learn more at bluezones.com.
We make our dressings, soups, hummus and dips in house, and we keep our food low in salt, sugar and preservatives. Most of our bowls mix brown rice or quinoa with beans, kale and fresh vegetables. Our tartines start with thick-cut, double-toasted sourdough. All of our food is vegan, and we have lots of gluten-free dishes.
