What the Approval Means

Blue Zones Project® listed Boulevard of Greens among its approved Fort Worth restaurants from 2018 on. In 2018, Fort Worth also became a certified Blue Zones Community®. You’ll see our Blue Zones Project Approved™ plaque in the café.

Blue Zones Project Approved status is given to a restaurant, not to single dishes. A restaurant earns it by putting healthy everyday practices in place, and the Blue Zones Project team checks the work.

What Are Blue Zones?

Blue Zones® are five places in the world where people live the longest and are healthiest. Blue Zones founder Dan Buettner, a National Geographic Fellow, found them with teams of researchers and studied how the people there live.

  • OkinawaJapan
  • SardiniaItaly
  • NicoyaCosta Rica
  • IkariaGreece
  • Loma LindaCalifornia

The people in all five places share nine everyday habits, which Blue Zones calls the Power 9®. We believe these habits can help lead to a long and happy life, and they guide how we cook.

The Power 9®

Nine habits the world’s longest-lived people share, and what each one means.

  • Move Naturally

Build movement into your day. The longest-lived people walk, garden and do chores by hand rather than relying on workouts.

  • Purpose

Know why you wake up in the morning. Okinawans call it ikigai; in Nicoya it’s plan de vida.

  • Downshift

Shed stress every day, whether with a nap, a prayer, a moment to remember loved ones or a happy hour with friends.

  • 80% Rule

Stop eating when you’re about 80% full (the Okinawan saying hara hachi bu), and make the last meal of the day the smallest.

  • Plant Slant

Eat mostly plants, with beans at the center. Meat is a small, occasional food.

  • Wine @ 5

In four of the five places, people enjoy a glass or two of wine a day, with friends or with food.

  • Belong

Be part of a community. Nearly all of the centenarians Blue Zones interviewed belonged to a faith-based community.

  • Loved Ones First

Put family first: keep aging parents and grandparents close, commit to a life partner and give your children time and love.

  • Right Tribe

Surround yourself with people who support healthy habits. In Okinawa, groups of five friends called moais stay committed to each other for life.

Power 9 Questions

How does Boulevard of Greens help with the Power 9®?

We believe the Power 9 habits can help lead to a long and happy life, so we try to make each one a little easier when you’re with us. Here’s how, habit by habit.

Move Naturally: how does Boulevard help?

Make the trip part of your day: walk or bike over to our café on Horne Street. Bring your dog, too. Dogs are welcome on our patio, and they get a treat: the Bark Bowl.

Purpose: what is Boulevard’s purpose?

We’re on a mission to make fresh food flavorful and accessible to people from all walks of life. Every bowl, soup and tartine we make is part of it.

Downshift: where can I slow down?

Take a break in our café or on our dog-friendly patio with a coffee from our full coffee bar. We’re open seven days a week.

80% Rule: do you have lighter meals?

Yes. All of our meals are on the lighter side: fresh, plant-based and low in salt, sugar and preservatives, so it’s easy to stop when you’re about 80% full.

Plant Slant: how plant-based is your food?

All of our food is plant-based. Most of our bowls mix brown rice or quinoa with beans, kale and fresh vegetables, and we keep our food low in salt, sugar and preservatives.

Wine @ 5: do you serve wine?

Yes. We serve beer and wine in the café, so you can share a glass with friends or with your meal. The selection rotates, so ask our team what’s available.

Belong: can I bring my group or community to Boulevard?

Yes. Bring your group to the café, swap a book on our community take-one, leave-one bookshelf, or rent the whole café for your event. See private events.

Loved Ones First: is Boulevard good for families?

Yes. Bring the whole family: we have a kids’ table and coloring sheets for kids, and dogs are welcome on our patio. You can also order catering for a family get-together.

Right Tribe: how can my friends or coworkers eat well together?

Make healthy food a group habit: set up a regular weekly catering order for your office, or meet friends here for lunch. See catering or call 817.782.9070.
